Scientist II

Job Title: Scientist II
Scientific Fields: Anti-Aging Research (especially Senolytics/Senomorphics), Cell & Molecular Biology, Pharmaceuticals
Full-TimeJanuary 1, 2023
Reports To: Director of R&D

Summary

Ponce Therapeutics (Ponce) is currently recruiting an experienced and motivated PhD-level Scientist II to become a key member of the Company’s R&D team.  Ponce is developing state-of-the-art biotechnology and pharmaceutical platforms to restore the youthful balance of aged (or “senescent”) and young skin cells. Several novel development pathways are being pursued at Ponce encompassing both senolytic and senomorphic strategies, targeting senescent cell elimination and reshaping the associated pro-inflammatory environment, respectively. This involves a “reboot” of genetic programing, turning back the skin aging clock to its youthful exuberance. Toward this goal, Ponce is developing both gene therapies and small molecule compounds to mitigate the deleterious effects of senescent cells.

This key hire will have a critical role in the day-to-day work and atmosphere in the lab at Ponce, which is located within fully integrated K2-BioLabs (K2) accelerator space in Houston, Texas. A successful candidate is expected to have a solid foundation in cell & molecular biology techniques, including but not limited to sterile cell culture techniques, cell transfection, flow cytometry, cytotoxicity assays, subcloning, ELISA, and western blotting. A successful candidate will also have previous experience working with and developing animal models and quantification methods for genes, small molecule drugs, and peptides, etc., extracted from biological tissues. Experience with the development and use of HPLC and/or LC/MS methods is also highly desirable.

The successful candidate is expected to lead, organize, and conduct research projects developed in conjunction with Ponce’s senior scientific staff and leadership team. They should be able to discuss and present their findings in a professional manner with other personnel and contribute scientific ideas to the R&D group by keeping up to date on the latest advances in the senolytics/senomorphics research area, and other relevant topics.

Ponce is a startup biotechnology company that values independent thinking and a drive to innovate. A willingness and ability to quickly learn new skills is a must, as we deftly pursue new ideas. Moreover, the desire for all team members to support each other as needed – even in efforts not included in one’s job description – is highly valued.

Specific Job Duties:

  • Development of in vitro and in vivo assays to determine the senolytic and/or senomorphic potential of Ponce’s novel drug candidates.
  • Design and development of methods for quantification of genes, small molecules, and peptides that are delivered transdermally, subcutaneously, or intradermally to animals.
  • Culturing and analyzing various immortalized and primary cell lines, with a focus on culturing skin cells (e.g., fibroblasts, keratinocytes).
  • Development of cell-based assays to functionally characterize gene-‑modified cells.
  • Preparing technical reports summarizing experimental results and presenting results to peers in small groups or videoconference settings.
  • Preparing standard operating procedures (SOPs) detailing experimental procedures.
  • Maintaining detailed records of experiments and necessary reagents using Ponce’s electronic lab notebook (ELN) system.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Doctoral Degree in Chemical/Bio Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics, or related fields with a solid foundation in Cell & Molecular Biology.
  • At least 3 years of relevant industrial and/or academic experience.
  • Exceptional experience working with animal models of disease.
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture (particularly 1° cells) and use of non-viral and/or viral vectors to introduce genetic material into cells.
  • Experience with cell-killing assays, including flow cytometry (and associated analysis software) and cell functional assays.
  • Ability to work as part of a team with proven ability to effectively plan and organize work activities and prioritize task completion to meet schedules and deadlines.
  • A cordial, collegiate and transparent disposition is a must to fit in culturally.
